The purpose of this article is to guide and inform you in making the best choice when printing custom t shirt tags. Knowing these simple guidelines when printing your neck size tags will help you produce a high quality finished t shirt.
Before You Print your T-shirt Tags Caution…
If you are printing Black Size Tags on White T-Shirts Beware, your tags will show from the outside of the back of the shirt.
Choosing black as the Ink color to print your size tags on a white t-shirt will show through the backside like the image to the left.
Unlike a front or back logo print, the size tag print is placed on the inside of the t-shirt making the ink visible when printed inside out. A solution for this is to use a Light Grey color to minimize the density of the black or dark-colored ink.
The ink will then be mixed to create a color that will reduce transparency, the key is to have enough contrast between the t shirt and the ink to mask the print slightly and to still show against the white t shirt.
Darker t shirts like Black, Blue or Dark Grey should be fine with white or lighter ink color. For darker colors we thin out the ink that’s applied to the t shirt, this gives the ink a softer vintage look when finished. If you are getting t shirt tags printed somewhere other than with us make sure to ask the person printing your t shirts about ink penetration.
Tag Removal and Printing
Why is Tag Removal so important?
Finding a quality blank t shirt with Tearaway Labels can be challenging. However the Anvil and Next Level have Tearaway label t shirts that make these t shirts our favorite to print tags on.
With non Tearaway labels, the t-shirts brands tag is sewn in between the neck collar and the shirt, when detaching a non Tearaway tag you run the risk of ripping out the stitching that is sewn on the back of the neck on the shirt.
This causes the loose string around the collar to come undone or tearing the actual fabric on the shirt.
If you happen to select a blank t shirt brand that has a sewn-in custom label and not a tearaway tag you can still print your logo and care information.
To remove the label we cut the extra material/label as close to the base of the shirt. You can expect to see some of the stitched in label left behind when cut with scissors.
Removing tags can be a long and laborious task and can extend production time if the lead time is important and you need size tags I’ve linked the best shirts below.

Sewn In Custom Size Tags
I’ll start by saying, I’m not a huge fan of sewn-in fabric / cotton / nylon t shirt tags on the neck part.
I usually end up ruining the t-shirt by tearing the tag in frustration because I can feel the extra material on my neck that itches.
It’s an uncomfortable feeling.
The extra piece of fabric hanging off the inside of your shirt and for people with sensitive skin this can be aggravating.
However, there are also other places besides the neck you place sewn-in fabric tags if you wish to create custom fabric tags.
Instead of a neck tag you can have your branded tag sewn in at the sleeve of the tee, bottom left or right side of the t shirt and screen print the Size Tag.
If you are looking for custom woven labels you can have your t shirt tags and fabric labels made Cruzlabel.
Here is the thing with fabric labels you’ll have to have someone sew or iron on the labels once created adding to your cost of goods.
Even though a label looks nice on a t-shirt and adds the extra touch the process is something to consider.
The Bad About Sewn In Neck Tags
Even though I like the Stussy brand I would recommend they sew their label on the outside and use a different location, the reason I ripped the neck label out was because it itched and was uncomfortable.
The edge of the thick Stussy label kept digging into my skin until I finally tore it off in frustration leaving behind a sad lonely string that undid my t-shirt from the inside.
Although this is not a major problem for me it is a bummer to have your t shirt start coming undone at the neck part.
I’ve done this to plenty of t shirts, another reason I wouldn’t suggest to our clients to not get custom sewn-in labels.
