Make a Canvas Picture from Your Favorite Photo Collection

A canvas picture is a fun way to show off all of your actual favorite photos and decorate your home or give as gifts to friends and family. Here are some tips on how to make a canvas picture of your own!

People take over a trillion digital photos every year. Most of those photos will sit on our phone, digital camera, or computer for a very long time.

Instead of letting some of those photos languish in digital limbo, why not convert them into a canvas picture? It’s fun, and easier than you think, and turns any photo of yours into a displayable work of art.

Here’s how to make a canvas picture from your favorite photo.

Step 1: Choose a Great Photo

It may be a photo of your child or pet, a moment from your wedding day, or a scenic picture you took while on vacation in an exotic location. It could even be a favorite motivational quote.

But more important than the subject matter is choosing a really high quality and high-resolution image. The higher the resolution, the better for printing purposes.

The higher resolution the photo is the better you can edit to fit a large size canvas or a small size canvas.

Your photo needs to have a resolution of least 300 DPI (dots per square inch) or better to look clear and sharp when printed. The higher the DPI, the more pixels or “dots” the image is made of. More pixels give your photo more detail.

A low-resolution photo may look great on your phone or computer screen because those devices are suited for displaying photos low in pixels. However, a low-resolution photo that is blown up in size and printed is going to look very blurry.

Photos with a low file size are usually low resolution while higher file sizes indicate crisper, sharper-looking and larger images.

This means you may need to select a high resolution setting on your phone or camera before taking photos and choosing one to print. Always aim for the highest settings that will give you the highest resolution.

If you are stuck with photos you love that are low in size, consider choosing a canvas collage print option. This is a great way to print and display several smaller photos.

Use Photo Editing Software to Check Size and Resolution

Photoshop-Logo-create-canvasIf you have Photoshop or other photo editing software on your computer, you can use it to check the resolution of your photo, crop it to the proper size, and make other adjustments.

Open up a high-resolution photo in Photoshop, and you’ll see the measurements of its height and width.

This is very important as you need a photo that is large enough for the canvas size you have in mind.

Again, if your photo is larger than the canvas size you are using, you can always crop your photo so that it fits properly on the canvas size you are printing.

Once you have the perfect high-resolution photo, you need to choose the right size canvas to print it on.

Step 2: Choosing the Canvas Size

You can place it on a shelf, hang it on a kitchen wall, and easily move it to other areas of your home.

Most printing companies also offer plenty of canvas size options so you can pick the perfect dimensions for the area you want to display the artwork.

Consider the orientation of your photo. If it’s taller than its width, choose a canvas size that corresponds to it, unless you don’t mind cropping part of the photo.

If you’re looking for a canvas picture to display on a desk, shelf, or bookcase, choose a smaller size. Sizes such as 8″ x 10″, 11″ x 14″, and 12″ x 16″ are ideal for displaying photos in these areas.

A long hallway or wall space above a television sometimes looks lonely. For these areas, a long canvas size such as 24″ x 36″ works wonderfully. It will bring balance to the space.

For making a statement with a large canvas print, choose a 32″ x 48″ size and hang or display it near an entryway where it will make an impression.

You can also fill a wall with canvas prints in various sizes. With canvas printing, you can use your imagination to fill a home with artwork of your own creation.

Step 3: To Frame or Not to Frame

Wood Frames for Canvas PrintsWith most printing companies that offer canvas printing, you have the option of adding a frame to your printed image.

This add-on feature is completely up to you and your personal preferences. Most frames are available in black, white, brown, or metallic. If you’re displaying a group of photos, you may want to choose the same color frame for all of them or go without one so you can move them to another part of the home.

Framing will add an additional cost to your final piece. Finally, don’t forget to enjoy your canvas print each time you see it on display in your home!
